Watercolor by Leigh Talbert Moore Finishing senior year is supposed to be the best time in a person’s life. Finishing senior year as Julian’s girlfriend should’ve been the icing on the cake. Knowing the secret that could change everything for him is the only thing threatening to spoil it all.  Until Jack returns. Anna and Julian are together at last, and it’s as hot and happy as they knew it would be. The only problem is The Secret. And Jack. But while Anna is determined to fight for the guy she loves, she could still lose Julian when he discovers the truth she’s been helping to hide. Exclusive excerpt: “I just want you to touch me.”  I took his hand and put it at my waist, under my shirt. I pressed my mouth to his and chills followed as his fingers slid lightly over my skin. I was drowning again and I reached over to find the edge of his jeans. I pulled up the soft fabric and lightly touched his bare stomach.  Suddenly he was gone. My lips were still in a pucker, and he was down at the water away from me. I watched as he stripped off his t-shirt and slipped out of his jeans before diving into the dark Gulf waters.  I fell forward, laying my head on my forearm in the sand. “I’m going to kill your parents,” I sighed.

by Leigh Talbert Moore Three bad things I learned this year: -People you trust lie, even parents.  -That hot guy, the one who’s totally into you, he might not be the one.  -Things are not always how they appear. Three good things I learned this year: -Best friends are always there for you, even when they’re far away.  -That other hot guy, the one who remembers your birthday, he just might be the one.  -Oh, and things are not always how they appear. Anna Sanders expected an anonymous (and uneventful) senior year until she crossed paths with rich-and-sexy Jack Kyser and his twin sister Lucy. Pulling Anna into their extravagant lifestyle on the Gulf Coast, Lucy pushed Anna outside her comfort zone, and Jack showed her feelings she’d never experienced... Until he mysteriously withdrew. Anna turned to her internship at the city paper and to her old attraction for Julian, a handsome local artist and rising star, for distraction. But both led to her discovery of a decades-old secret closely guarded by the twins’ distant, single father. A secret that could permanently change all their lives. Falling in Love Changes Everything…
“C’mon,” Julian said, helping me stand. “Let’s blow off this party and catch a movie or go to Scoops. This isn’t our scene.” I shook my head. “I just really want to go home.” The tears were trying to start again. “Can I just go home now?” “Sure,” he said, holding my cheek. I took a limping step, and he stopped. “Does it hurt to walk?”  My leg was throbbing. I nodded, looking down, and before I realized what was happening, he was lifting me in his arms.  “Julian, wait,” I held his shoulders. “I’m too heavy!”  “It’s okay,” he said, walking on. I sighed and leaned my head against his shoulder. I didn’t feel like fighting. Gentle pressure against my temple, and he’d kissed me. “You’ll get over this,” I heard him say under his breath.

The Truth about Letting Go is here!

A companion to The Truth About Faking (not a sequel; the books can be read out of order),

The Truth About Letting Go (link) by Leigh Talbert Moore

Ashley wants to smash everything in her once-perfect life. Charlotte wants to walk in Ashley's seemingly charmed shoes. Colt wants to turn Smalltown USA on its ear--with Ashley at his side. Jordan wants to follow his heart... but Ashley is the one sacrifice he never expected to make.

Up until now, Ashley Lockett has always followed the rules. She's always done the right thing, played it safe, and then her ideal life is shattered when her dad dies suddenly. Fueled by anger and grief, she vows to do everything opposite of how she lived before. She rejects safety, the rules, faith, and then she meets Jordan. Jordan has big dreams, he's had a crush on Ashley for years, he's a great kisser... but he's also safe. Enter Colt. He is not safe, and he's more than willing to help Ashley fulfill her vow.

Excerpt: I feel Colt laugh, and he looks down into my face. That’s when he seems to realize what I’ve been acutely aware of for the last several minutes—our bodies are pressed together. “It’s awesome, yeah?” he says. “Adrenaline rush.” “Yeah,” I breathe. “I guess.” I’m not sure if he’s going to kiss me until he does. His mouth covers mine, and energy mixes with the alcohol flooding my body. Our tongues slide together, and I grip his shirt so I don’t collapse.  Every single bit of this is wrong, and there’s no way I’m stopping it. It’s back, that good feeling. The sadness has been pushed out again, and in its place is this rush, this rush of adrenaline like Colt said.  He pulls back and smiles at me. “We’re going to start dating. Now. You’re my partner in crime.”

Original Titles

There are a lot of books out there that didn't start out with the titles they have now. Gone with the Wind is a classic one and there are a lot of others. Some get changed in editing and some authors just have a change of heart. But what about with Indies?

The self-published author has the freedom to hold on tight to their title, but sometimes their critique partners know better and tell them that a change is probably better.

How to Date an Alien was originally that title, but had a brief stint as "Interstellar Starplex" Yes. I know. I wouldn't have read it either.

My Paper Heart was originally My Own Summer and that was what I queried it on and got the most responses with, but after googling the title I found it was the same as a Deftones song that wasn't a pleasant one and I changed it. That ended with me changing some elements of the story as well.

I also decided to ask some other Indies about their original titles and here are there responses:

Rashelle Workman:  "Exiled" started out as "Connected." But I knew I would be writing more than one book and I wanted words that all ended the same. The series was also called The Connected Series, but I had a marketing friend tell me that the name of my series was too vague, and didn't give enough information about the story. So I changed it to Immortal Essence - which is exactly what the story is about. =)

Sleeping Roses was changed to Distorted by the publishing company it was with, but when I took my rights back, I changed it back to Sleeping Roses because of Exiled, Beguiled, Dovetailed (I didn't want another "ed" title that didn't go with the Immortal Essence series. I actually like Distorted better, but... Sleeping Roses works and makes sense in the story).

Blood and Snow was always Blood and Snow. When I came up with the story idea, I thought of different ideas, but knew Blood and Snow was what I needed to call it, even though there is another book with the same title.
Leigh T. Moore:  All my books start out as something different b/c I'm awful at titles... LOL!

TTAF was originally "Shadow Falls" after the neighborhood where it takes place (which is neither shadowy nor has waterfalls)
TTALG was Shadow Creek after the new development/McMansion neighborhood adjacent to SF

I was advised by agent to change the name of TTAF from Shadow Falls b/c it "sounded too paranormal." I agreed.

Rouge was originally Cheveux Roux, which means "red hair" in French. Teeny, the little girl Hale's trying to protect has red hair, and she's sort of the motivation for all of Hale's choices.

Everyone, and I mean everyone, advised me against using a foreign language title.

And yes, I am aware Rouge is a French word--LOL! That was also agent's idea.

In hindsight, I'm thinking I probably should've changed it to something completely new to distance it from that situation. (In south Louisiana, when you hear "Rouge," you do not automatically think "Moulin Rouge." I think Baton Rouge.)

The science fiction novel that's with Agent Eric was originally called Jackson, but then Jackson turned out to not be such a great character, and everyone (including me) knew it had to change.

At the moment, I'm calling it 21 DAYS because that's how long their captivity lasts.

But that kind of sounds like zombies to me. So who knows what it'll end up being... LOL!
Cindy Hogan:  I wanted Created to be called Ravaged, but people associate ravaged with sexual things, so I brainstormed for about a month and then looking at synonyms of synonyms, I came up with Created, which I love!
Have your books had different titles? What made you change them?

The Next Big Thing

So, Hugh Howey mentioned Sarra Cannon in his "The Next Big Thing" post and then Sarra Cannon mentioned me and now I'm hyperventilating a little. I wonder if this is how Celion Dion feels. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO COME DOWN FROM THIS?

If it's not obvious, I'm a huge Sarra Cannon fan girl...as evident by this video. If you haven't read the Peachville High Demons series, the first one is FREE on all eretailers including Amazon, so get it now.

But the purpose of this Internet meme, as some of you know, is to talk about your next book. The My Alien Romance series is over, I know, it's sad. A lot of people have emailed me about continuing the series, but I think it ended just the way I wanted it to. There is going to be three more books in the My Paper Heart Saga (because of the huge support from fans on that one when the book was going to be a stand alone), but today I'm going to talk about my upcoming project. The #SecretNAProject I've been teasing everyone with on Twitter. I'm working with Mae I Design for a cover and will reveal that in February with the release date in April. So without further ado, The answers about THE ONLY EXCEPTION.

What is the title of your next book?
THE ONLY EXCEPTION

Where did the idea come from for the book?
For awhile I've wanted to write a book with a liberal girl and a conservative guy, but couldn't think of a great storyline. Then I saw an episode of new girl in which Schmidt pretended to be Mitt Romney's son. Instantly that put an idea in motion of a conservative senator's son living next door to an uber liberal girl.

What genre does your book fall under?
New Adult Contemporary. It's pretty hot, but nothing I wouldn't let my MIL read. There are some controversial topics and some different political things, but as one of my CPs told me, "I hate politics, but I loved your character's banter on it."

What actors would you choose to play the part of your characters in a movie?

I kind of have an obsession with casting my characters...obviously. For MPH, Blaine and Libby were actually just in my head the whole time and hard to pick someone that would represent them. It got easier the more I wrote. I'm only going to pick a few characters, but hopefully it should give you a little taste.

Monica Remy- She's a fiery liberal with an eyebrow piercing and "auburn" hair (so she says...everyone else says red.) I would go with either Emma Stone or Jane Levy. I heart them both.

Trey Chapman- The conservative senator's son with a killer set of green eyes and a dimpled smile. *sigh* I think Colton Haynes would be amazing. I was pinning and came across his picture and then I think I drooled on my Ipad.

Melissa- Monica's friend and co-worker who has a mound of curly, brown hair and always keeps Monica in check. I think Emmy Rossum has the spunky personality and definitely the hair to pull of Melissa.

Mindy (Trey's mother)- She is described as bottled blonde and the perfect senator's wife. Immediately I thought of Anna Camp and her role in True Blood. So she's only 30 and would play a nineteen year old's mother...it could happen....

I have a very OBVIOUS choice for Trey's father, but I'm not going to put that down, so I'll just put my chocie for his mother. I realize that the actors for the son and mother are probably the same age, but it's my book and I think how I want.

What is the one sentence synopsis of your book?
Fiercely liberal Monica Remy prefers to blend in. Despite her tattoos, piercings, and outspoken personality, she transferred to Central to escape—before she finds out that her next door neighbor is the uber conservative senator’s son, Trey Chapman.

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
Self-published

How long did it take you to write the first draft of the manuscript?
No laughing...uh like two weeks. I write a lot and every day. With my new work schedule I probably write at least two-four hours a day with my lunch break, after work, and sometimes before work. It's crazy, but then it went off to my alpha reader, revise, first round cps, revise, and right now it is off to second round cps and then after I revise that, to my editor.

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
I'm sure that people are going to compare this to the big NA books that are out there now like THE SECRET OF ELLA AND MICHA or LOSING IT or books like that, but really what makes this book stand out is that I took the formula of bad boy and good girl and flip flopped it. Yeah, my hero is a genuine good guy. Soak that one up.

Who or what inspired you to write this book?
This book really took a lot of my heart and soul. Like I said, the episode of New Girl started it, but I needed something dark for Monica to escape from and then I had to put a political scandal in that dark moment. There is a moment in which Monica faces her dark past and I literally cried while writing it. I love this book so darn much it's a sin.

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?
Um...it's sexy? No, ha, there is more to it then than, but I try to pride myself on writing as sexy as possible without getting down and dirty (as obvious by the alien books). I'm not saying the characters don't get down and dirty, but...

For those who are leary on politics, it's more political banter. The characters have different beliefs in things, but it leads for some interesting scenes that will have you laughing out loud or crying with the characters.

AND, hot guy in dress clothes. That's all.

****

So, that’s The Only Exception and this is the first time I'm talking about it! Scary! It's out of the bag!

Now, it’s my turn to tag five writers. I haven’t checked to see if they were already tagged because I’m too lazy and it was hard to pick only five, but I decided to go with a few that have helped along with some ideas for this book...and then I added one more. I DO WHAT I WANT.
