The Strange Case of Kai Rowe

So there was this little book I wrote back in 2009 when no one wanted my New Adult title. It was called Life, Love, & Lemons about a girl named Bentley and a guy named Kai.

If you look back, as far as 2010 on my blog I was talking about this book and about Malakai Rowe.

I was originally going to publish it in April, 2012, but long story short, some other things got in the way and it was put on hold.

But in 2013, I decided it was time to dust this book off, re-edit and put it out there. By this time another Kai Rowe had emerged.

I didn't think it was that big of a deal. I had Malakai Rowe and she had Kaiden Rowe. Then I started getting bombarded with emails and nasty comments on GoodReads.

I'm use to bad reviews, it comes with the territory, but I really didn't expect people to be so outraged by this.  After the whole Jordin Williams plagiarism thing, I didn't want people to think I was doing the same to Wendy Higgins or anyone else for that matter. Life, Love, & Lemons is a contemporary fiction work. The punk boy next door is completely human. It's a fluffy YA book that you can read in one sitting. It's not erotica. It's not paranormal, just something for a good laugh. It's completely original and came out of my own twisted mind.

I'm sorry if I offended anyone by using the name Kai Rowe. He has now become Kai Stone. I did love the name Malakai Rowe. I loved it even when my critique partners thought it was stupid because when you say it out loud it sounds like "Cairo."

I was supposed to have eARCs ready by now, but this conundrum has pushed me back a little bit. I promise you that I will get this book out into the world and I can promise you that I'm real. That I would NEVER plagiarize anyone and I'm sorry that me and Wendy Higgins are so awesome that we came up with the same characters names.

I hope y'all don't think any less of me and I hope that you can find a place for the new Kai in your shelf of book boyfriends :)

Life, Love, & Lemons Update

I know some of you have been waiting for this book, but unfortunatley the release is going to be pushed back.

WHY?

Well for one, I would like to re-work the cover and make it more awesome and for two I want to get How to Break up with an Alien out sooner.

WHAT?

Yes!  I am working with a new editor (hedanicreations.net) and my deadline to her is the beginning of May. With that being said, I need to work on getting this last draft done of How to Date an Alien and should have it available by the end of May or beginning of June for you all to enjoy.

So sad for Lemons to wait until this summer, but you all get more alien!

YEAH!

Coffee Talk with Alex Bianchi

In addition to Fangirl Friday I decided to help out one of my characters and let the heroine of the My Alien Romance series conduct some interviews of her own with some of her favorite characters. So for the first ever Coffee Talk with Alex Bianchi she will be interviewing Bentley Evans from Life, Love, & Lemons.

Alex: Alright, Bentley, since this is Coffee talk, what is your coffee drink of choice?

Bentley: I'll take a grande, non-fat carmel latte with an extra shot of espresso, no whip, and soy milk.

Alex:  Alright...Uh I guess that is a good choice? Anyways, so what brings you around this area? Slumming it in Winnebago?

Bentley: *eye roll* I'm not slumming it anywhere. My dad used to be an engineer and then he got laid off. Now I live on the East Side of town and it actually isn't as bad as it sounds.

Alex: Is that your ride out side, then? What you drove here? *points to the car out the window*

Bentley: No, that would be my boyfriend's Ford Falcoln. I think he likes that thing more than me.

Alex: So, your boyfriend is the emo-haired kid in the giant orange blob?

Bentley: Yeah, he is. Sure it may not make sense for the preppy girl to hang out with the emo kid in the Falcoln, but it works for us. We balance eachother out, you could say.

Alex: *squints at the boy in the car* He almost looks familiar. Does he happen to know anyone from Calta?

Bentley: WTF is Calta?

Alex: Uh, nevermind. Anyways, so since your life seems to be getting pretty excited, if someone where to make a movie about your life, who would play you and you friends?

Bentley: Well, I don't have cable anymore and haven't been to the movies since who knows when, but I guess I can try to pick some people. Let's see, probably Hillary Duff to play me, but back in the day before she got all married and pregnant, because I am totally not married or preggo for that matter. My boyfriend would probably be played by some guy from one of those bubblegum punk bands or whatever like Hot Chelle Rae. And my best friend Gabby would be played by someone Latina and the only Latina actress I can think of is Penelope Cruz and she is like way old.

Alex: Ok...then...Let's round this out with your favorite food, book, and TV show or movie.

Bentley: My favorite food would have to be sushi- especially volcano rolls. My favorite book is probably one of the Twilight ones and for TV show or movie. Like, I said I don't want much TV or go to the movies, but all the Friday the 13th movies will always be a classic to me. Well those and Clueless.

Alright Bentley thanks for being my first guest on Coffee Talk and can't wait to read Life, Love, & Lemons! (Coming out in April!)

She chose the name Laine, And then I thought, "I like Laney." So now we have a Laney! You won't know about her until book 3, but let me tell you she is a good character!

Also? The highly anticipated cover for How to Break up with an Alien is over on The Indelibles blog.

I think it is beautiful :) My cover designer CAMarshall is AMAZING.

I'm not ready to give out a preview of How to Break up with an Alien yet, so here is another tidbit of Life, Love, & Lemons.

Happy Monday:

“Evans, go out and finish sweeping out on the floor while Kai finishes up by the register." Jason ordered with his nasally voice.
“Um, can’t I do it later once everyone leaves?" I muttered, twisting my fingers in my belt loops.
He handed me the broom with one hand and started easing me out to the floor with the other. “You can let them know it’s time to leave while you’re out there sweeping.”
I was completely mortified and my entire body shook. I started sweeping as far from their booth as possible and went as slow as I could. Hoping that maybe by the time that I got there that they would have been done and gone. Of course I could only be so lucky.
“Oh look at that, the princess has got to sweep." Jake laughed as Taylor joined in.
I didn’t look up at them, but I could feel their eyes burning holes into my back.
“Hey guys, the lobby is going to be closing in about ten minutes so if you would be able to finish up that would be great." I muttered as I tried not to look them in the eye.
“Yeah, uh huh." Taylor pretended to listen as she tightened her grip on Jake’s arm.
“Oh shit Brett what happened to your shake." Just as I looked over, Jake took Brett’s almost completely full shake cup and dumped it all over the ground. My eyes couldn’t have gotten any wider as I just stared.
“Um, hey do you mind cleaning that up?” Taylor tapped her nails on the table.
I didn’t know what to do and I couldn’t speak, so I did the only thing that I knew to do; I grabbed the broom and ran to the back room to cry.

Writerly Wednesday: Life, Love, & Lemons

So it MAY not be completely ready to publish yet, but just for you all I'm going to give you a sneak peak at the first chapter of Life, Love, & Lemons.  This may change as the publishing date looms near, but I can give you atleast a little tidbit for now.

When life hands you lemons sometimes you just have to say screw the lemons and bail. This really shouldn't be me, driving through my beautiful maple lined neighborhood with sprawling brick homes, to a two bedroom apartment off one of the busiest streets in town. Goodbye private schools and designer purses; hello public school and part-time job.
This all started six months ago when dad got laid off from his job. I never thought that a big company would lay off so many engineers and that one of those engineers would be dad.
It probably wouldn't have been so bad if mom wasn't anything more than a housewife and a really bad one. During the last six months, dad spent every second on the couch feeling sorry for himself and mom spent that time going out to lunch. I really shouldn't have been surprised when my parents told me that our house was in foreclosure and we would be moving.
I really wondered what my family must look like from the outside. Before dad’s lay off everything was perfect. Mom didn’t need to work, Dad brought home the paychecks, and I spent my time being the glowing St. Christopher’s honor roll student. But now I was just another public school student working at a fast food joint.
Yeah that's right, public school and fast food. It makes me shudder just thinking about it. I searched for months for some kind of a mall job, but even though I practically maxed out my credit card at half the stores, they still wanted someone with experience and I had absolutely none. Which means I wasn’t exactly looking forward to my orientation at Burgers’R’Us, but I would rather look stupid in a hairnet than not be able to afford college. And I knew I would need something, because by the looks of the new apartment we pulled up to, it definitely wasn't a place I wanted to stay at for too long.
“Well this is nice." Dad tried to squeak out a smile as he stepped out of his SUV.
Mom peered over her obnoxiously large sunglasses. The look on her face said that she obviously was not impressed with the old brick building.
“And just look at this courtyard!" Dad started walking to the little area of green space that led up to the apartment building. Unlike our old house with blossoming trees and new flowers, half-dead grass and cheap lawn ornaments welcomed us to the apartment complex.
“Yeah I’m sure this is the perfect spot for a gang gathering or a shoot out," my voice dripped with sarcasm. I wheeled a suitcase out of my Mini Cooper and tried not to let the wheels get caught on every pothole in the parking lot.
Dad just smiled as mom rolled her eyes. Ever since dad got laid off he’d become even more of a pansy. It was like when they took his job they also took his manhood and all he could do was roll over and take whatever came to him.
“Alright, whatever, let’s see this place before I go to work,” I sighed.
Mom muttered something under her breath about my father not being able to provide, but I couldn’t understand exactly what it was and I’m sure that it was meant only for dad to hear.
Sometimes I actually felt bad for my dad. It wasn’t like he meant to get laid off and mom’s cynicism did not help. He did lose his job, but it wasn’t like she couldn’t find work. She just chose not to.
We walked down a tiny hallway with wood paneled walls and very outdated, shag carpet. I thought I would gag from the over powering smell of different ethnic cooking, but lucky for me, dad opened the door to our apartment before I choked to death.
“Now this is just temporary girls. Once I get my job back we’ll go looking for a new a house, a better house in fact.”This was the most positive I had seen dad in months, so I tried to smile, but it fizzled at the sight of the tiny apartment.
Outdated yellow kitchen that was no bigger than my old bathroom, living room with scalloped white walls and horribly scratchy beige carpet, and the two small bedrooms and even smaller bathroom weren’t big enough for a family of ants.
“Wow...it’s…really.."
I couldn’t even think of what to say. The tears failed to impede my eyes. This wasn’t our beautiful four bedroom house, and this was my new.
Of course my mother couldn’t hide things as well as I could.
“This is just awful! How am I supposed to entertain in this dump? Marcus, can’t you call the bank again? I’m sure there is something they can do to stop our house from going into foreclosure!”
Dad just looked down. The sweat dripped off of his receding hairline. He was like a sad puppy. Mom didn’t even seem to care. I almost think that she liked him being beat down. Instead of waiting for him to respond she stomped over the horrible carpet, over the linoleum and toward the door.
“Where are you going?” Dad called after her.
“Out!”
She slammed the door behind her with a few faint chips falling to the ground as a result of it. She did that a lot lately. I’m not sure where she went, but it always seems to be after my parents start talking about our financial situation.
"Well…" Dad turned toward me with that pathetic look still plastered on his face. "I guess it's just you and me tonight, Bentley."
"Uh…actually I have work you know and then it's Brett's annual back to school party, so like I was just going to lay out for a bit before work and then head over thereafter."
"Okay. I guess I can try and hook up the TV and order in a pizza by myself." He stared at me, his eyebrows raised with that same sad puppy face plastered on.
I couldn’t miss Brett’s party. It was bad enough that I wasn't going back to St. Christopher’s, but I knew I would lose even more of my friends if I stopped hanging out with them. Ugh who knows what kind of people I would meet in the Rocktown public schools?

Co-writing a novel

I’ve been asked by quite a few people or one in particular  *coughKarenAmandaHoopercough* about co-writing a novel.
As you can see, my newest novel has two authors on the title, me and my friend since grade school, Kelly Viel.
So how does this all work? Well, there are many ways I’ve heard how people do this. But here is how we did it.
It all started in 2010, you know I didn’t have a lot going on besides a wedding, but pshwah, right? Anywhoo, I wrote a novel the year before and was furiously querying with no luck. (Note: This was NOT How to Date an Alien, but another novel that is getting an overhaul and will be talked about later in the year). Kelly read the other novel, loved it, and we had been chatting about books and such for a long time.
I decided that I needed a fresh idea, something new. Kelly then said, “Why don’t you write about a girl whose dad gets laid off and they have to move to a small apartment?”
My response, “that’s stupid and it’s been done before.”
I could eat those words now. I started writing and it actually turned into a cute concept. I discussed it with Kelly and she agreed, helping me out with the main character’s names (Yes, she came up with Bentley and Kai) and helped me to get the story moving.
This continued for the three weeks I wrote the first draft of the novel. If I was stuck on something, I would call Kelly and she would help me out with a plot point or a name, or just something to spice it up. After writing it we decided to shelve it. A novel with co-writers was just something I didn’t want to seek publishing at that time.
Then I went Indie.
Inbetween working on How to Date an Alien, I decided to read over this old manuscript and it was actually REALLY good. So I called up Kelly and said, “Hey want to get this thing published?” And she said, “Why the hell not?”
So that is my story.
Any questions about co-writing a novel? Are you excited for some lemons?
