Throwback Thursday: How to Break up with an Alien

Most #throwbackthursday or #tbt posts are people putting up pictures of them from high school or grade school, but I decided to do something different. I'm going to post excerpts and teasers from my older books that y'all might not be as familiar with. Maybe this meme will catch on. Maybe it wont.

Last #ThrowbackThursday I did a post from How to Date an Alien, so today I'm continuing on with the alien tried and posting an excerpt from How to Break up with an Alien. Enjoy!

One would think that saving the world from evil aliens would be enough to exempt me from my senior year of high school. Or even the fact that I was promised to the prince of Calta, home of said evil aliens. A future Caltian princess needed her beauty sleep. But no, I was expected to join the non-alien masses in Advanced Senior English at 8 a.m., which meant I had to be awake enough to get through my school and work day. Only there weren't enough sheep in the world to count my way into sleep. My anger and annoyance kept me wide awake.

A brilliant blue light streamed down from my bedroom ceiling, reflecting off the mirror above my dresser.

“You’re late,” I mumbled, not even lifting my head from the pillow.

The light disappeared and the weight shifted on the left side of my bed. A cold burst of air bore through my covers and I knew that my alien was nearby.

“I’m sorry. There was some sort of Martian threat on the Utah capital and I had to handle it.” Ace’s warm fingers brushed against my cheek. The rest of his body might have been cold, but his hands were always warm and left me with a sensation that I couldn't resist. It felt like rubbing aloe on a sunburn.

“A likely excuse.” I opened my eyes and grabbed my glasses from the nightstand, placing them on my face and sitting up next to him.

“But I brought you something.” He grinned, pulling a box from behind his back with a giant cartoon purple dinosaur on it.

“Feeble Weebles!” I tried not to scream and wake up my family in the middle of the night, but it was freaking Feeble Weebles! The Caltian cereal that was like Lucky Charms but with only marshmallows.

“So does this make up for me being late?” He leaned in closer.

I nearly brushed my lips against his, pulling the cereal from his grasp. “I’ll think about it.”

“Oh, come on, for me?” He lifted his eyebrows and flashed his irresistible smile that could have been on its own cereal box.

I swallowed, setting the box on my nightstand. I tried to think of something to say instead of just staring at the way his temperature control suit molded to body. With his body's normal temperature being half of what a human's was, he always had to wear it when he visited, which was supposed to be around ten o’clock instead of two in the morning.

"I just wanted to come and wish you luck on your first day of school and work." He ran his fingers along where my sleeve met my arm. "Sorry, I couldn’t get here earlier.”

“Is this what it’s always going to be like?” I looked up to meet his eyes. They were endless pools of black, a bit frightening, but intriguing at the same time.

“Always like what?” He lay down next to me, his long body spreading along my twin-sized bed while he propped his spiky-haired head up on his extended arm.

I sighed. “Me waiting up for you, only to have you show up late or busy with some alien duty.”

Ace shook his head, his hair brushing against my headboard. “I hope not. Once you are at Northern Arizona, I can arrange to see you more often. Then we won’t have to worry about sneaking around when your mother isn’t awake, and you can even come see me instead of this beaming thing.”

I lay down next to him, pressing my body to his. His muscles shivered underneath me, and even through the temperature control suit I could feel his icy hot chill. “How about you figure out how to beam me places, and then I can just come see you at work whenever I want?”

Ace pressed his forehead to mine, his eyes dark and close. “Why must you ask me questions that you know are impossible?”

“Impossible things are happening every day.”

Ace let out a silent laugh, the cold air blowing through his nose and tickling my lips. “You stayed up watching musicals while you were waiting for me, didn’t you?”

“I can sing some of them if you would like.”

“I think there is something better that you can do with your mouth than sing.”

He tilted his head and pressed his lips to mine. After waiting all night for him, the electric current his touch sent through my lips and all the way down almost made up for it. Almost.

"Alex?" a woman's voice rang through the door.

Crap, my mom. I broke the kiss and put my finger to my lips. Ace rolled off the side of my bed and crawled underneath it. I pulled the comforter up and over the side to try and hide him the best I could.

The door squeaked open and mom poked her blond mess of hair in. She reached her fingers under her thick glasses, rubbing her eyes. “Is everything alright? I thought I heard something?”

"Oh, no, just woke up and thought I would listen to some Ira Glass podcasts.” I pushed the comforter farther onto the side of my bed, hoping that she wouldn't walk over and see Ace lying between the bed and the window.

"Oh.” She glanced at my IPod in the dock. Hopefully she was too sleepy and wouldn’t realize that nothing was actually on. “Well you should probably get to sleep. I know the first day of school is exciting, but it'll be better if you are awake for it. You need your rest."

"Okay, I will do that.”

She nodded and I thought she would leave the room, but instead she walked over to my nightstand. My heart pounded as I thought about how close she was to finding Ace under my bed. Hopefully he didn’t breathe too loud.

“What is this?” She picked up the box of Feeble Weebles, squinting at the giant purple dinosaur.

“Just some cereal I got the other day. Been hiding it in my room so I wouldn’t have to share with Elijah.” Good excuse, Alex, Good excuse.

Mom shook her head. “I’ve never seen anything like this before.”

I shrugged. “Yeah it’s new.”

“Huh. Alright, well next time let me know when you get a box and I will try and get some for Elijah as well.”

“Will do.”

Finally she walked to the door and closed it behind her. I waited until I heard the door to her bedroom shut before I pulled up the comforter and leaned over the side of the bed. But Ace wasn't there. Nothing but dust bunnies.

Huh.

I sat back up and felt something cold against my back. I looked up and there was Ace, kneeling behind me.

"Looking for something?" He placed his hands on my shoulders and brushed his lips to my forehead.

If only I had the speed that my alien boyfriend had, then I could just zip through my senior year and forget about distance and mom’s annoyingly great sense of hearing. But when said alien boyfriend was in my bed, I wanted nothing more than the opposite speed. I wanted to freeze time to keep everything just the way it was.

The skinny bitch in YA

Lovely topic, isn't it?

I've talked about many things with girl characters in YA and Hollywood alike that are focused on the pretty, skinny girl with the chubby sidekick friend. And today I'm here to say that I'm kind of thinking the skinny bitch is getting to this chubby author.

I recently read through the sample of a book because it was a pretty big seller and there were aliens in it. I was really excited that the main character was kind of geeky, a blogger, but then I read further. Oh she's kind of geeky, but she's REALLY pretty which means guys still find her hot (Bella anyone?). I immediately did not buy the book because it made me really upset. Why do all the girls in YA have to be skinny and pretty? Why can't I find a chubby girl kicking butt and the guy likes her for much more than that initial 'oh hot girl!'

In HOW TO DATE AN ALIEN, Alex is a bigger girl, but by no means is she obese. I describe her as being around a size ten with curves (as evident when Jen tries to sexify her up for Ace.) One of my early readers at one point said that my MC had too many flaws: glasses, big hips, being the non-white girl. I took these comments in and I toned down a little bit more of Alex's looks (she had crooked teeth and other things, but I let them go). But then I started to think about it...why is every main girl in YA literature end up being a skinny girl?

Sure, there are the girls that are gangly skinny, but for the most part they are svelt. Even in adult literature there are very few women who I think represent a "normal" size girl. This is one thing that Charlaine Harris actually does really well in the Sookie books. Sookie is a size 8-10 and she owns it. The girl is loved by vampires, fierce, and she rocks a size that isn't the same as a mannequin.

But then there are others in which there is the lead chubby girl, but she is almost whiny and constantly harps on the fact that she is the big girl, but still ends up finding a guy that loves her anyway. I used to read these books and then I just got tired of the big girl whining. Yeah, I may be chubby too, but I don't want that to be the focus of the book. Give me a character with curves that kicks butt like a Sookie Stackhouse!

The skinny bitch isn't just regulated to the main character, most of the mean girls are also stick figures with a big rack who harp on the main character. This is what I love about Awkward (the TV show on MTV). Sadie Saxton is a mean girl, but Sadie Saxton is actually a little bit bigger. There have been episodes in which they talk about Sadie's size, but the whole point of her being bigger isn't her identity. Sadie is a straight up mean girl and she owns it. She owns that she's a big girl and she owns the fact that she can take down other girls.

This is actually why in HOW TO BREAK UP WITH AN ALIEN I made the mean girl NOT a skinny bitch or a cheerleader. Gemma is a curvy rugby player with a gruff voice. She's a bit racist and has some snaps at Alex that are unnecessary, but Alex is a tough chick puts those to a halt (and hopefully the reader learns that derogatory names are not cool).

What do you think of the skinny bitch in YA? Do you think it's getting better and more progressive?

The My Alien Romance Series gets a makeover

Now don't get me wrong, I LOVED my original covers for How to Date an Alien and How to Break up with an Alien, but to some people it was giving off the impression that it was a cutesy MG book.

If you still loved my original covers, the beautiful designs by CA Marshall will still grace my paperbacks. To up the stakes and grace my covers with a hot alien boy, I enlisted the help of the awesome Steven Novak who has designed covers for Rashelle Workman, Megg Jensen, and Angela Carlie.

He understood my vision and my NEED for Ace to have guyliner on the covers. These new covers will be uploaded to Amazon ASAP so hopefully the rest of the world can understand the hotness of aliens.

What do you think of the new covers?

Have you hopped over to Amazon yet and picked up How to Date an Alien for FREE?

Monday Musings: Sometimes I stare at hot men

Isn't it a lovely Monday?

Okay maybe it's a lousy Monday and it's raining out or there is a drought and your water bill is higher than the Empire State Building. Either way I'm still going to talk to you about my muses and today it is all about the boys.

In How to Break up with an Alien and Alien Book 3 (Title reveal to come soon, I'm holding out, bwahahahaahaha), Ace interacts alot mor with the human world. One of the important things I have to think about is how someone from another planet would look at different things like football games or coffee houses. So for some "research" I decided to watch movies and TV shows with other men that are displaced.

Let's start out with Keanu Reeves in Bill & Ted's excellent adventure. To complete a project for school two dudes travel back in time and bring back famous people throughout history. I'm not sure how 'hard' Keanu actually had to act in this role, but his reactions to different people made me laugh out loud. At first it was just the little things, like the fact that I mispronounced 'Socrates' for almost an entire year after seeing this movie since I thought it was the right pronounciation or how Keanu just stared at every single new person he met wide-eyed like they may possibly beat him in his fluffy head. Then I started to notice his body language to different objects and people in the past, how he would lean his body back slightly when he was aprehensive about approaching someone or how he would nod profusely when he actually had no idea what the other person was saying. By watching his body language I was able to gauge a bit on how Ace might react to something like pork chop sandwiches and still think it was impossible to eat a pig out of foil.

Then of course there is Hugh Jackman in Kate and Leopold. How would someone distinguished from the past deal with modern day society? I love me some Hugh Jackman, especially his sideburns in Wolverine, so any excuse to watch him dressed up like an English noble is a good one for me. Ace has been around Earth for a few decades and when he actually did interact with humans, it was the 1940's a definite different way of life. So I watched how a man from the past interacted with a future world, using different languages, bowing, and just looking so good in a suit. Mmmm men in vests...

Which leads me to my other favorite alien...

Yes! You are correct the vested man is Joseph Gordon Levitt and he started his career as an alien on the TV show 3rd Rock from the Sun!  JGL is the ultimate in playing a displaced character, he did it throughout his years as a confused, long-haired teen in 3rd Rock and then cut the hair and rocked a vest to play a dream entering hottie in Inception. If you want a laugh you can watch himi and his family with their reactions to life on Earth and dating humans OR you could just watch him wearing a vest in inception...your call.

What males do you use for inspiration? Did you know JGL was an alien?

Why Ace and Alex break up

Ive gotten flack from reviewers and even critique partners and friends about this concept of this second book, so why did I write it?

Lemme tell ya... When I read New Moon and saw the movie I was beyond disgusted with Bella. Her vampire boyfriend dumps her, so what does she do? Well she cries in a hole for awhile, stays in her room for days, and then uses the hot werewolf boy to help her become a daredevil so she can see visions of her vampire boyfriend. Then Edward comes back after leaving her ass and all is forgiven?

That wasn't the message I want girls to have about break ups. That their boyfriend is the end all and be all. This story is about Alex and her dreams. Her goal of going to Circe was to eventually get into Columbia and she found Ace along the way. But what happens when instead of thinking about life with her alien forever she thinks about the alternative, a normal human life.

People said that I could have made Ace a bigger jerk to add to the break up or even just done the Girlmance love triangle I originally had planned. But no. This is Alex's story. She has to come to her own conclusions about what she wants in life. It's not a fairy tale. Long distance relationships are hard and deciding what she wants for her future is even tougher.

I promise that the third book will redeem the love story with lots of heavy petting, but if you want a story with a strong heroine that goes for what she wants, no holds bar, then How to break up with an alien is for you.

P.s. But there is totally still kissing and alien making weird comments about Earth.

How To Break Up With An Alien is here!

The Highly anticipated second book in The My Alien Romance series is here!

Face it, long distance relationships in high school are hard, especially when the other one in the relationship is an alien. Alex Bianchi may have survived an intergalactic battle, but that still doesn't excuse her from her senior year of high school, or qualify her for any sort of scholarship. To make up for college tuition costs, she takes a job at a local coffee shop. If only coffee could solve all of her problems. As Alex's senior year progresses, everything changes and she can't figure out if it is interstellar or if it is just time to break up with an alien.

It is available now on Amazon and Smashwords.

Check out the series that Lydia Kang, author of The Fountain, calls

A tiny bit Twilight, A tiny bit Men in Black, and a whole lot of fun!

For a limited time the first book in the series, How to Date an Alien is only 99 cents for the Ebook. The #1 Alien Romance on Goodreads!

Get it to day at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, & Smashwords.

Writerly Wednesday: Character playlist

Hello!

Are you getting excited for the release of How to Break up with an Alien? I AM.

Okay, maybe you aren't...maybe you were just hoping Myra would come back to my blog.

Speaking of Myra, after checking out her playlist for one of her characters I decided to introduce you to two VERY important new characters in How to Break up with an Alien by giving you who I would cast as them if the book were made into a movie and their personal playlist.

That is all you get. Not who their character is, what they, do but just that.

Muahahahahahaha.

Okay, first off, we have Simone. I picture her to look like singer Sarah Hudson

Yes? And how about a little playlist. Does this give you any sort of a clue into her character?

Big Yellow Taxi - Joni Mitchell
Monster- Paramore
Set the world on Fire- Black Veil Brides
Apologize- One Republic
Set fire to the rain- Adele

And of course Brody. Brody has become many of my CP's favorite new character. If he had to be cast in a movie, I would choose Liam Hemsworth (with the shaved head).

Now for his playlist.

International Harvester - Craig Morgan
Rough 'n' Ready - Trace Adkins
Asphalt cowboy - Blake Shelton
Thank God I'm a country boy- John Denver
If love was a plane- Brad Paisley

I may have to do this again. I found it fun. Now tell me, what do you think of these two characters? What role do you think they will play in this book?

Also? The highly anticipated cover for How to Break up with an Alien is over on The Indelibles blog.

I think it is beautiful :) My cover designer CAMarshall is AMAZING.

I'm not ready to give out a preview of How to Break up with an Alien yet, so here is another tidbit of Life, Love, & Lemons.

Happy Monday:

“Evans, go out and finish sweeping out on the floor while Kai finishes up by the register." Jason ordered with his nasally voice.
“Um, can’t I do it later once everyone leaves?" I muttered, twisting my fingers in my belt loops.
He handed me the broom with one hand and started easing me out to the floor with the other. “You can let them know it’s time to leave while you’re out there sweeping.”
I was completely mortified and my entire body shook. I started sweeping as far from their booth as possible and went as slow as I could. Hoping that maybe by the time that I got there that they would have been done and gone. Of course I could only be so lucky.
“Oh look at that, the princess has got to sweep." Jake laughed as Taylor joined in.
I didn’t look up at them, but I could feel their eyes burning holes into my back.
“Hey guys, the lobby is going to be closing in about ten minutes so if you would be able to finish up that would be great." I muttered as I tried not to look them in the eye.
“Yeah, uh huh." Taylor pretended to listen as she tightened her grip on Jake’s arm.
“Oh shit Brett what happened to your shake." Just as I looked over, Jake took Brett’s almost completely full shake cup and dumped it all over the ground. My eyes couldn’t have gotten any wider as I just stared.
“Um, hey do you mind cleaning that up?” Taylor tapped her nails on the table.
I didn’t know what to do and I couldn’t speak, so I did the only thing that I knew to do; I grabbed the broom and ran to the back room to cry.

Book 2 title

Originally I was going to post the info about my Life, Love, & Lemons book on the blog today, but instead I have other plans.

I finished the first draft of book two for the My Alien Romance series last night. This doesn't mean it is going out to the world anytime soon because it still needs alot of editing, but I have been killing you all with the suspense of a title.

So without further ado the title of book two is...

How to Break Up with an Alien

Yeah! Hoping for a June release date and will definitely be getting in touch with bloggers this spring. I also plan to have a cover reveal soon :)

What do you think the book is about? Does the title make you  nervous for Ace and Alex?
